What Is Melt Value?
Melt value is the intrinsic worth of the precious metal content in an item — what a refiner would pay for the raw metal after melting it down. It is calculated by multiplying the pure metal weight by the current spot price. For example, a 14K gold ring weighing 5 grams contains 2.925 grams of pure gold (58.5% of 5g). At a gold spot price of $4,412.89/ozt, the melt value would be $414.99.
Dealers and gold buyers typically pay a percentage of melt value — often 70% to 95% — because they need to cover refining costs, testing, and profit margin. The calculator above lets you enter a payout percentage to see what you'd actually receive.
Our calculators support grams, pennyweight (dwt), troy ounces, and grains. Prices update automatically every 10 minutes from live market data, so you always get an accurate valuation.
