How Scrap Silver Buyers Calculate Payouts
Scrap silver buyers purchase sterling flatware, jewelry, hollowware, and broken silver items based on the melt value — the pure silver content. They pay you a percentage of that melt value, typically between 70% and 90%. The percentage depends on the quantity, the buyer's margins, and the refining costs. Larger lots almost always get better rates.
For example, if you have 200 grams of sterling silver and the spot price is $65.56/ozt, the melt value is $389.97. A dealer paying 80% of melt would offer you $311.97. The same 200 grams of .999 fine silver would be worth more because the purity is higher.
Always separate your silver by purity before selling. A dealer will test each piece and weigh it separately — mixing .925 sterling with .800 European silver or silver-plated items will only slow down the process and may result in a lower blended rate. Be honest about plated items; they have no melt value and including them can damage trust with a buyer.
Scrap Silver FAQ
How do I calculate scrap silver value?
Weigh your silver, identify the purity (.999, .925, or .900), and multiply the weight by the purity and the spot silver price per gram. Use the calculator on this page — enter the weight, select the purity, and optionally enter a dealer payout percentage to see your estimated cash offer.
What do dealers pay for scrap silver?
Dealers typically pay 70–90% of melt value for scrap silver, depending on quantity and purity. Larger lots get higher percentages. Sterling flatware and jewelry usually get 70–85%, while .999 bullion can get 90–95% or higher.
Can I sell silver-plated items for melt?
No. Silver-plated items contain only a thin layer of silver over base metal — not enough to recover profitably. Only solid sterling (.925), fine silver (.999), or coin silver (.900) has meaningful melt value.
