How to Identify the Gold Version
All $20 Liberty Gold coins are 90% gold. The edge is reeded. The obverse shows Liberty facing left with a coronet. The mintmark is on the reverse, below the eagle: "O" for New Orleans, "S" for San Francisco, "CC" for Carson City, no mintmark for Philadelphia. The Saint-Gaudens version (1907–1933) has a different design — Liberty striding forward.
Key Dates — Do Not Sell for Melt
1854-O (very rare), 1861 Paquet Reverse, 1870-CC, 1882-CC, 1883-CC. The 1933 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle is the most valuable US coin (only one legal to own). Check any Double Eagle before selling.
About the $20 Liberty Gold (Double Eagle)
The $20 Liberty Head Double Eagle was minted from 1850 to 1907, designed by James B. Longacre. It was the largest US gold coin struck for circulation, containing nearly a full troy ounce of gold. The obverse features Liberty with a coronet, and the reverse shows a heraldic eagle with a shield. The Double Eagle was born from the California Gold Rush, which flooded the US with gold and necessitated a larger denomination.
Each $20 Double Eagle contains 0.9675 troy ounces of pure gold — just shy of a full ounce. The total weight is 33.436 grams at 90% gold and 10% copper. The melt value is the gold content multiplied by the current spot price, shown in the spec table above. At gold prices above $2,600 per ounce, each coin contains over $2,500 worth of gold.
The Double Eagle was used for large transactions, bank reserves, and international trade. Millions were minted, but many were later melted — either by the government during the Gold Reserve Act of 1934 or by private parties when gold was recalled. This makes certain dates rare despite high original mintages.
The Liberty Head Double Eagle was replaced by the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle in 1907, which is widely considered the most beautiful US coin design. Common-date Liberty Head and Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles trade close to melt value with a small premium. The 1861 "Paquet" Reverse and the 1854-O are rare dates worth far more than melt. Any Double Eagle should be checked for date and mintmark.
