Key Dates — Do Not Sell for Melt

1875-S (extremely rare), 1854-O, 1855-O, 1861-D, 1879-O, 1887-CC. Many Half Eagle dates are rare — check the date and mintmark before selling for melt value.

About the $5 Liberty Gold (Half Eagle)

The $5 Liberty Head Half Eagle was minted from 1839 to 1908, designed by Christian Gobrecht. It features the same coronet Liberty design as the Quarter Eagle on the obverse and a heraldic eagle on the reverse. The Half Eagle was a workhorse denomination in 19th-century commerce — it was large enough for significant transactions but small enough for daily use.

Each Half Eagle contains 0.2419 troy ounces of pure gold. The total weight is 8.359 grams at 90% gold and 10% copper. The melt value is the gold content multiplied by the current spot price, shown in the spec table above. At gold prices above $2,600 per ounce, each coin contains over $600 worth of gold.

The Half Eagle series is one of the longest-running in US coinage, spanning nearly 70 years. It was struck at Philadelphia, Charlotte, Dahlonega, New Orleans, San Francisco, and Denver. The series includes many rare dates, particularly from the 1850s and 1860s when mintages at the Southern mints were very low.

The 1875-S is one of the rarest US gold coins — it has a mintage of 200,000 but nearly all were melted, and only a handful survive. Common-date Half Eagles in circulated grades trade at a modest premium over melt, but any Half Eagle should be checked for date and mintmark. The series has more rare dates than the Quarter Eagle, and many are worth far more than their gold content.
